Occupational Distribution of Expired Job Postings Compared to Worker Job Changes in 2025

This paper compares the occupational distribution of expired job postings and worker job changes to get a sense of job postings’ occupational representativeness compared to hiring. We use National Labor Exchange (NLx) job posting data and publicly available monthly Current Population Survey (CPS) data to cover monthly hiring in 2025. We find that most occupation groups make up similar proportions of expired postings and worker job changes (within 3 percentage points). However, Healthcare Practitioner and Technical occupations make up a much larger portion of expired postings than job changes (14% versus 5%), Construction and Extraction occupations make up a slightly smaller portion of expired postings than job changes (2% versus 6%), and Computer and Mathematical occupations make up a slightly larger portion of expired postings than job changes (7% versus 4%). We discuss considerations for select occupation groups and the conceptual and empirical differences between their expired job postings and job changes.
